County Lines: drugs conspiracies & human trafficking

Date: Thursday 17th January 2019
Time: 6pm
Venue: 25 Bedford Row, Seminar Room
Speakers: Alex Di Francesco, Henry Dickson and Emma Stuart-Smith

This seminar will provide an overview of some of the legal issues that commonly arise in drugs conspiracies involving allegations of human trafficking.   Emma Stuart-Smith and Henry Dickson will examine the legal framework and defences to consider.  In addition an overview will be given of how to make effective representations to the CPS in relation to whether it is in the public interest to prosecute the case, as well as issues arising when your client may be the victim of human trafficking.

Alex Di Francesco will examine these issues from a different angle.  Police forces across the UK are becoming increasingly attuned to human trafficking but the mechanism in place for the identification of its victims can have consequences for the integrity of evidence. He will discuss the ‘National Referral Mechanism’, the dangers it poses and the importance of disclosure in those cases where complainants have benefited from it.
