Sophie Nandy

Sophie became a tenant in January 2024 following the successful completion of her pupillage.

Sophie completed her first-six under the supervision of Beth O'Reilly, her second-six under the supervision of Monica Stevenson and her probationary tenancy under the supervision of Laura Collier.

Before beginning pupillage, Sophie worked as a paralegal at a London criminal defence firm, assisting on a wide range of cases. Alongside her BVS studies, Sophie contributed to the upcoming publication of “Human Rights in Criminal Law”, specifically regarding the relationship between Article 7 ECHR, UK criminal trials, and sentencing.

Sophie worked as a research assistant to Counsel on multiple immigration appeal cases, that had a background of criminal proceedings.

Whilst at University Sophie was Project Director of a Pro Bono Unit. This project supported the Syrian Legal Development Programme.

R v ED (2023) – ED was charged with stalking involving serious alarm or distress over a period of 2 years. Acquitted of this offence as well as alternatives after trial.
R v DS (2023) – Secured suspended sentence for DS, who had pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine and cannabis.
R v DF (2023) – DF was sentenced for dangerous driving and other driving offences, which placed him in breach of a community order. DF had been pursued by police before crashing into a residential front garden at speed. He received a suspended sentence.
R v HI (2023) – HI was charged with harassment. A section 78 application was successfully made to exclude reference to an earlier NMO. HI was acquitted.
R v JT (2023) – Secured suspended sentence for section 20 offence involving fracture to eye socket.
R v DC (2023) – DC was due to be sentenced for a non-dwelling burglary and related offences. He was already serving a 16 month sentence for other offences. Persuaded the court to pass a concurrent sentence of 6 months on the basis of totality.
R v LS (2023) – Following legal argument regarding prosecution failure to disclose underlying disclosure in an assault trial, the prosecution offered no evidence.
