Examining the Impact of the New Sentencing Guidelines
This year the Sentencing Council have issued several new guidelines which include:
- The Imposition of Custodial Sentences; which provides step by step guidance through the sentencing exercise, and is applicable in both the Crown and Magistrates Court.
- Reduction in Sentence for Offenders; which significantly effects the reduction in sentence for a guilty plea by changing the traditional 'earliest reasonable opportunity' proposition.
- Sentencing Children and Young People : where greater emphasis is placed on the background of young people in the sentencing exercise.
This seminar will provide an overview of the important features of each of the new guidelines. It will deal with how these guidelines will affect advice given at first appearance and how it will impact on case management at the initial stages. The seminar will also provide a useful insight for those involved with defending in criminal proceedings, providing guidance on how to deploy the new guidelines effectively at sentencing.
