Better Case Management & Digital Case System

The introduction of Better Case Management (BCM) nationally on 5 January 2016 is transforming the way that cases are prepared for trial and managed by the courts. The emphasis is on case ownership and responsibility, early and continuous engagement with the prosecution and compliance with the Criminal Procedure Rules and Practice Directions.

The BCM protocol requires the defence and prosecution to take steps at an early stage to ensure that cases are fully case-managed within 35 days of sending to the Crown Court. In parallel with BCM, the Digital Case System will be introduced nationally by the end of March 2016, after which there will be no paper files for CPS prosecutions in the Crown Court.
