Success in High Court appeal on Rwanda extradition

Diana Ellis QC and Joanna Evans on behalf of their client, EN, and Sam Blom-Cooper on behalf of his client, VB, successfully responded to the appeal of the Government of Rwanda, following the discharge of their clients in the longest running, and one of the most complex, extradition proceedings to come before the courts.  The High Court upheld the view that the Requested Persons would face a real risk of an unfair trial were they to be sent back to Rwanda to face charges relating to their alleged key roles as organisers of the 1994 genocide. EN also successfully cross-appealed on the issue of double jeopardy. Rwanda may now attempt to salvage the extradition request with further diplomatic assurances.
